33 Immortals is a co-op action-roguelike video game developed and published by Thunder Lotus Games. Set to launch in early access on March 18, 2025, the game is available on Windows PC via the Epic Games Store and Xbox Series X|S, with day-one availability on Xbox Game Pass. It supports up to 33 players in cooperative gameplay, blending fast-paced roguelike mechanics with the large-scale raid dynamics of massively multiplayer online games (MMOs). Inspired by Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy, 33 Immortals follows damned souls rebelling against divine judgment in a quest for eternal life.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

33 Immortals is played from a top-down perspective and features cooperative multiplayer for up to 33 players per session. Players assume the role of a damned soul, navigating a procedurally generated afterlife that includes regions inspired by the Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso of The Divine Comedy. Each session lasts approximately 25 minutes and mimics the structure of an MMO raid, with instant "pick-up and raid" matchmaking allowing players to quickly join ongoing battles.

Players begin in the Dark Forest, a hub world where they select from four character archetypes—melee, ranged, support, or tank—before entering the battlefield through the Eternal Gate. Gameplay involves exploring Torture Chambers (mini-dungeons), fighting hordes of monsters, and collecting Relics to enhance abilities. Completing chambers triggers divine wrath, such as map-wide fire events, and unlocks Ascension Battles, where surviving players split into teams to earn Legendary Relics with global bonuses. Sessions culminate in large-scale boss fights against formidable foes, including figures like Lucifer.

The game emphasizes teamwork, with mechanics like reviving fallen players within a time limit and "co-op powers"—devastating moves requiring collaboration. Weapons are themed around the seven deadly sins and seven heavenly virtues, totaling 14 unique options. Between sessions, players return to the Dark Forest to upgrade their loadouts, interact with NPCs, and unlock new weapons, relics, and poetic perks for stat boosts. Cosmetic customization is also available for player avatars.

Setting and Story[edit | edit source]

33 Immortals is set in a stylized afterlife where players embody souls condemned by God for their mortal sins. Unwilling to accept eternal punishment, these renegades form a rebellion to fight for eternal life. The narrative draws heavily from The Divine Comedy, featuring reimagined versions of characters like Dante, Beatrice, Virgil, and Charon. Beatrice, for instance, is portrayed as the rebellion's leader rather than a passive guide, while Virgil is a female scholar focused on science and weaponry. The number "33" reflects the 33 cantos in each section of Dante’s work, symbolizing the game’s core concept of 33 players uniting against divine forces.

Development[edit | edit source]

Developed by Thunder Lotus Games, known for titles like Spiritfarer and Sundered, 33 Immortals marks the studio’s first venture into online multiplayer gaming. Announced at the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2023, the game was initially slated for a 2024 release but was delayed to 2025 to refine stability and incorporate player feedback from closed beta tests. Early testing phases occurred in 2024, including a closed beta from May 24 to June 2, with community input shaping the game’s direction. Thunder Lotus expanded its team to handle the technical demands of a 33-player online experience, originally experimenting with up to 100 players before settling on 33 for balance and thematic resonance.

The game entered early access on March 18, 2025, with plans to evolve based on player participation. Thunder Lotus has emphasized community involvement, encouraging feedback through Discord and spontaneous playtests to enhance the final product.

Release[edit | edit source]

33 Immortals launched in early access on March 18, 2025, for Windows PC (via the Epic Games Store) and Xbox Series X|S. It is available on Xbox Game Pass from day one, requiring an online multiplayer subscription (e.g., Game Pass Core or Ultimate) for console play. The early access phase allows players to experience the game as it continues development, with no set date announced for the full release as of March 2025.

Reception[edit | edit source]

As of its early access launch, 33 Immortals has been noted for its ambitious blend of roguelike and MMO elements, though full critical reception is pending its ongoing development. Players have praised the seamless matchmaking and cooperative chaos, while Thunder Lotus continues to address stability and balance based on early access feedback.
